Although barbel sometimes inhabit lakes and canals they generally prefer fast flowing rivers and usually the faster the better. They don't tend to like the very fast and rocky trout and grayling sections of highland rivers.
Sometimes anglers will use carp tackle and 4-6 oz leads. I will occasionally use a 3-4 oz lead in flood but normally I prefer something around an oz or just about enough to hold bottom.
The British record barbel is 21lbs 1oz from the Grat Ouse at Adams Mill and was caught in 2006. During late spring or early summer barbel can travel considerable distances to find suitable spawning grounds. Barbel can live to be over 20 years old.
